REGENERATIVE DESIGN and DEVELOPMENT for a Changing World

Description:

The current need for regenerative + resilient design is urgent. In order to sustain a safe and vibrant quality-of-life, we must respond holistically to the design of our built environment and elevate the potential above common practice. The term “Built Environment” includes a series of nested scales - from buildings to infrastructure to neighbourhoods, and often connected via the Public Realm. In the face of weather extremes, economic disruption, and resource depletion that are now becoming common place, our societal and planetary well-being depends on the cooperative interaction of all elements in our lives: social, economic and environmental. This session will address these issues by taking an applied systems thinking approach through built work. The session will also recapitulate the first year of the RAIC’s newly formed Committee on Regenerative Environments (CORE) and invite discussion around regenerative capacity-building in Canada.

Learning Objectives:

  • To understand the concept of regenerative development and design and to identify key aspects of it as a design and development process
  • To explore the potential of regenerative development and design for shifting approaches and outcomes
  • To engage in active discussion around the potentials of regenerative development for shifting practice, and the potentials of the Committee for supporting this capacity in Canada
